The Whistler House Museum of Art is committed to:

  • Preserving the birthplace of James McNeill Whistler, one of America’s premier 19th and 20th century artists;
  • Raising awareness in the Greater Merrimack River Valley, State of Massachusetts, the United States and internationally about the history of the City of Lowell, of the historic house, and the works of its original residents, innovators of the American Industrial Revolution;
  • Educating a diverse and ethnically rich public about 19th Century American art, and art in general, promoting current research and exhibitions related to Whistler, the house, Lowell and regional artists.

The Whistler House Museum of Art (WHMA) is proud to say that it has promoted programs of DEEI (Diversity, Equality, Equity, and Inclusion) for over twenty years. Over the past 10 years, the organization has increased its participation in DEEI tremendously. The mere structure of our organization strives to promote all of these distinctions in every area of operations.

The following are examples in which the WHMA has practiced each of these organizational values:

  1. The WHMA is led by a Board of Trustees that is diverse. The President of the Board/Executive Director is a woman born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and is of Armenian descent.
  2. The Board of Trustees, Staff, Volunteers, Artists, and Members consists of those from Asian (Korean, Chinese, Cambodians, Laotians, Vietnamese), Latino, African-American, Middle-Eastern, Bosnian, East Indian, and Sri Lankan cultural backgrounds.
  3. The Board of Trustees, Staff, Volunteers, Artists, and Membership is also represented by members of the LGBTQ+ Community.
  4. WHMA programs have serviced up to 12 different ethnic backgrounds through its Multi-Cultural Youth Summer Art Program.
  5. The WHMA provides services in the way of art classes and tours to all different socio-economic levels of the Greater Lowell community, focusing on low-income, underserved, marginalized, and middle-income citizens. Events, exhibitions, lectures, and classes are open to the public FREE OF CHARGE for those in the Acre Community in Lowell.
  6. The WHMA is inclusive in the services provided to "People of Disabilities," including the blind, hard of hearing, and physically and mentally challenged individuals. We have employed people with disabilities as part of our volunteer staff.
  7. The WHMA also caters its programs and training to all age groups, from school aged children to senior citizens, including specific volunteer and internship programs, which are flexible and accommodating to each and every individual’s needs. FREE and lower admission fees are granted to these individuals.
  8. The WHMA provides employment and internship programs to members of all diverse communities.
