Description: The prestigious James McNeill Whistler Distinguished Art Award was established in 2010 to recognize an individual or organization who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership, innovation, and the promotion of the visual arts both locally and internationally. The Whistler House Museum of Art invites you to showcase your artwork in conjunction with this prestigious event, which will take place at the Umass Lowell Inn and Conference Center on Wednesday, June 24. Submitted work will be considered to hang as a special exhibition at the Umass Lowell Inn and Conference Center for a two-week period, and then continue in the Parker Gallery. Please note that space in the exhibition is limited, and the submission of artworks does not guarantee acceptance.

The recipient of the 2020 James McNeill Whistler Distinguished Art Award is community activist, humanitarian, and philanthropist, Nancy L. Donahue. Nancy has always been an active supporter of the arts in the city of Lowell, which has a fascinating history and a bright future.

Exhibit Criteria: We seek works in all mediums that showcase the city of Lowell and all it has to offer. New works are encouraged.

Exhibit Criteria: The theme of this year’s juried quilt exhibition is INFINITE POSSIBILITIES. The Whistler House Museum of Art welcomes art quilts of all kinds, colors, and subject matter under this theme, allowing all fiber artists to showcase their strongest work. As with all art; composition, color, and design are important towards the creation of a finished work of art. Integrating creative skills and imagination presents the artistic expression of infinite possibilities to the individual artist. We urge quilters to include descriptions of handmade aspects of their work or any unique techniques used on the quilts under the “Material/Technique Used” section of the entry form.

Jurors:

Janice Jones: An experienced quilter, Jones’ work has been published in the Quilters Newsletter magazine. She has won numerous awards in fine art exhibitions and textile art shows, including “Best in Show”. She feels that working with textiles allows her to push boundaries and create a story that conveys a sense of tactile warmth and character. By adding texture, depth, and movement to her work, she draws the viewer in and invites them to touch and feel the energy of her quilts. She uses color to create drama and dimension, using fibers, embellishments, and hand painted elements for added interest.

David Jones: Born in Wales and educated in England, David Jones was an engineer by trade, but has always been a talented artist, and became a full-time artist in 2011. His work has been published in many international contemporary and modern art books, and he has exhibited in foreign countries. He is the president of the Arts Institute Group of the Merrimack Valley. He is a member of the Whistler House Museum of Art, the Brush Art Gallery and Studios, and the Andovers Artist Guild, and the Arts League of Lowell. Jones has been the recipient of many prestigious awards, internationally. His unique style is self-described as “precisionist dreamscape”.

Entry Fees: The entrance fee is $30 for up to three quilts. New Members: If you are not a member of the Whistler House Museum of Art, you may send a check for $55. The fee will include a $40 artist membership and a reduced entry fee of $15. Please note that it is not required for quilters to be members, but membership includes the ability to submit work to our members exhibitions, visit the historic home, attend special events, and receive a greater portion of the profit when works are sold.
