October 2021

Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's October Artist of the Month:

Wendy James

Originating from her urban photographs, Wendy’s oil paintings depict mundane in-between moments with figures and scenes that are not typically regarded as beautiful. The compositions often incorporate contrasting colors, saturated hues, and unusual viewpoints. Wendy’s paintings encourage the viewer to rethink and enjoy our common, everyday spaces.

Wendy’s black and white photomontages depict surreal environments. The unrecognizable figures encourage the viewer to momentarily become the person in the photos as they enter a dream-like experience. She uses Photoshop to juxtapose unlikely combinations. Her intent is to fool the eye for a brief moment into believing the scene as plausible.

Earning a BA in Art Education, Wendy began her 37-year teaching career at Essex High School in Vermont where she taught photography and ceramics. After her children left the nest, Wendy started exhibiting her photography and ceramics in shows and galleries. Drawn to explore color, Wendy began oil painting at age 50. Experience with Photoshop made altering her photos quick and exciting while creating vibrant colors and simplified shapes. She began using her laptop’s altered photos as “sketches” alongside her easel while painting.

Upon retirement, Wendy and John Brickels, her sculptor husband, moved to Lowell to be closer to their grandsons in Groton. They presently reside at Western Avenue Lofts. They also share Studio 207 at Western Avenue. In addition to the Whistler House, Wendy is a member of Lowell’s Western Avenue’s Loading Dock Gallery and the Brush Gallery. Wendy also creates ceramic sculptures and pottery.

The WHMA is excited to share with you a collection of Wendy's work. If you are interested in purchasing any of these works of art, contact the Whistler House Museum of Art at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call (978) 807-6699.

September 2021

Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's September Artist of the Month:

Suzanne Hodge

Suzanne Hodge is a Boston area-based oil painter whose favorite subject is cityscapes. Nighttime reflections in the city often evoke a feeling of mystery and possibility that are the inspiration for many of her art pieces.

Hodge's first foray into painting was in 2011 on a three-month stay in the market town of Tralee, Ireland. Hodge and her sister rented a little stone cottage on a narrow country road and would ride their bikes out to neighboring towns every day. Nearly every evening they would walk down to the bay on the road that passed by their cottage. It was during this extended visit that Hodge bought some paints and a canvas and created her first piece of artwork.

Years earlier, in her first semester at UNH, she had taken Drawing I and II but went on to receive a degree in mathematics.

Upon her return to the states, Suzanne enrolled in several courses at the New Hampshire Institute of Art (now The Institute of Art and Design at NE College) and took a studio class with Patrick McKay, who helped her to develop her current and evolving artistic style.

In 2013, Hodge rented a studio space at Western Avenue Studios (WAS) in Lowell, Massachusetts. WAS is home to the largest collection of artists on the east coast. Over 300 artists of varying media have a studio or loft at this unique place. You can find Hodge nearly every day painting in her studio. She mostly uses photo references for her paintings, but will often venture out into the city to do sketches of a subject that catch her eye before completing a painting back in the studio.

The WHMA is excited to share with you a collection of Suzanne's work. If you are interested in purchasing any of these pieces,

August 2021

Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's August Artist of the Month:

Janice Jones

Janice’s work has been published in the Quilters Newsletter magazine, and has won many awards in fine art exhibitions and textile art shows, including “Best in Show”.

Her quilting roots go back to her great aunt who was a Mill Girl during the early 1900’s at the Bates Textile Mill in Lewiston, Maine. Following family tradition, her journey as a quilter began when she was a child.

Janice’s passion has evolved to creating art quilts, and after several years of extensive studies with prominent teachers in this field, she decided to augment her training by becoming a privately tutored art student, and studied the work of the Masters.

She feels that working with textiles allows her to push boundaries and create a story that conveys a sense of tactile warmth and character to her work. Her intention is to draw the viewer in and invite them to touch and feel the energy of her quilts. She endeavors to add texture, depth, and movement to her work. She likes to use color to create drama, and dimension, and often applies fibers and embellishments or hand painted elements for added interest.

Janice lives in Methuen, MA with her husband, David, who is also an artist. Together they give lectures, trunk shows, and workshops to Art Groups and Quilt Guilds.

The WHMA is excited to share with you a collection of Janice's work. If you are interested in purchasing any of these pieces, contact the Whistler House Museum of Art at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call (978) 807-6699.
