Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's September Artist of the Month:

Dennis Lucas

A traditional impressionist painter, Dennis Lucas' work focuses on the ever-changing light and its effects on color in nature. What matters most to him is being in the moment and expressing the gorgeous light and beauty of the four seasons.

Dennis began drawing and painting at a young age, producing works of art while viewing creatively inspired children’s education programs. While attending Arlington High School, he was voted Best Artist among his fellow students and he continued his artistic training at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He became inspired by Impressionist painters Vincent Van Gogh, John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, and Mary Cassatt, although his favorite remains Claude Monet.

His love for Impressionist works drew him to the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, MA. The school, inspired by the French Impressionists and known for its colorful plein-air painting method, was established over one hundred years ago. Lucas immediately adapted to this style of painting while living, working, and practicing his craft on Cape Cod.

Currently, he is an artist and teacher at the Cape School of Art. Dennis guides young artists through painting, sharing his love of art and inspiring the works of others. Previously, he taught in Continuing Education in Arlington and Lexington, MA. When he is not creating art or instructing others, Dennis volunteers his time as a caregiver for the elderly.

Dennis paints and exhibits throughout New England and has conducted many workshops in the great outdoors. Whether on the streets of France, Italy, around historic Boston, Provincetown, or the green mountains of Vermont, he uses his palette to create luminous impressionist paintings.

A former Artist-In-Residence at the historic Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, MA., Denis’ work is in many public and private collections. He is an active member of the Boston Guild of Artists, The Current Gallery, the Cutter Gallery, the Lowell Art Association, Inc., and the Whistler House Museum of Art. His work has been exhibited at the Center for Arts and Learning in Montpelier, VT, the Cutter Gallery in Arlington, MA, and the Whistler House Museum of Art’s Parker Gallery. Currently, Lucas is exhibiting at the Sarah Jessica Gallery in Provincetown, MA. He lives in Montpelier, VT, painting the light as it passes over the green hills and mountains.

Dennis Lucas is a proud artist member of the Whistler House Museum of Art.
